Is this still on? I haven't checked LJ in so long what with Facebook horning in on the action.
To sum up:
I see that my last post concerned pitching screenplays. Since one of the repeated comments I got while doing that was "if you're interested in making movies, make movies" I have been doing that. As a result I have a new website that I keep fairly well updated: www.cyclopeanpictures.com. This is the home of all my filmmaking endeavors, including the last two years' worth of 48 Hour Films me and my friends have made.
My old graphics website is no more...but I have a new portfolio site up at www.alexbradley.org.
I suppose you're wondering why I bothered to post again at all! I'm glad you asked. This link should explain everything.

After an intense November of plugging and pitching my work, I spent December at what seemed like one very long party/family commitment. So I took a break from working on screenwriting and stuff for what turned out to be January.
But I'm back at it, sort of. I'm pestering the people I sent screenplays too, sort of working on a spec script for "The Office," and making an animated version of Pandora. Slowly.
One of these days I'm going to have to crack my Hollywood Directory and do some serious research on finding agents or managers to pitch to. Whee.
I'm still kind of worn out from December, I think. But I have to get cracking at some point.
You know what? I think I know the source of my lethargy. I know I ain't quitting my decently paying stable job for the foreseeable future.
Dreaming's for the rich.

...ok, maybe not quite yet.
But the pitch festival went VERY WELL!!
The first one was the worst because of nerves, but my appointments were jammed back to back so I ran out of time to be nervous and just went with the flow. I'm glad I prepped so hard because I was able to change my pitch on the fly depending on how these people were looking at me.
If I had brought more than one copy of Canterbury Trails on Saturday, I would have put two scripts directly in the hands of producers!
( Here is how it shook out: )
Whew! That was quite a trip, but I would say I got definite confirmation I'm on the right track.

Let's pretend I've already said all the stuff about not posting in forever.
I've been busy.
I have been absorbing everything I can read about screenwriting from some great (and some not so great) books on the subject, and writing screenplays since pretty much the beginning of the year.
Some of you, as with tiguh_tiguh, may be wondering what happened to working on graphic novel proposals or indeed anything involving illustration. ( Here's the explanation. )
So far, I have completed drafts of the following: - Call of the Void-- A maverick scientist snubbed by Earth's elite opens a gate to higher dimensions and brings back terrors beyond her control. A science fiction thriller with a Lovecraftian twist.
- Canterbury Trails-- A shy student, who wants popularity and fame by becoming a great writer, joins a busload of storytelling college kids on pilgrimage to Spring Break, and learns that popularity--and better storytelling--means coming out of his shell. A modern retelling of Geoffrey Chaucer's classic Canterbury Tales as raunchy and riveting as the original.
- Capitol: Origin-- In a post-apocalyptic version of Washington, D.C., a subversive hacker, a spiritual peacemaker, and a two-fisted rich kid set out to change their world for the better. A pilot script for an original sci-fi television series.
I seem to like the letter C. Hmm. I'm brushing up these drafts and rolling around ideas for spec scripts for The Office and Supernatural, as additional writing samples.
I'm also signed up for a "pitch festival" this November, where I'll get to meet with different agencies and producers in New York and pitch ideas. But basically when these scripts have been cleaned up as best I can, I am ready to hunt for representation.
I'm pretty excited, as I feel like I have found a way to work towards my dreams of being in the entertainment industry and still pay the @$%#^% bills. I still want to do the comics and graphic novels, but I need to break free from Booz Allen's comfy paycheck first.
If you're interested in taking a look at one or more of these scripts and critique them, let me know and I can send you a copy.

Lately I have been burned out on drawing, not inspired to work on Shalott or Dead Angels, although I have been musing over doing something with more immediate return, like a web comic that I can try to do a 2-page thing a week on. Or 2 pages every 2 weeks or something.
Anyhoo.
Since I haven't been drawing lately, I've caught up on some of my other hobbies, like paper models (just finished Mont St. Michel), jigsaw puzzles (still working on a 5000-piece map), and The Movies!
I just posted the first chapter of an idea that I have had rolling around as a video game concept. Since that won't come to fruition any time soon, I figured I'd do some short stories in that world that tell the story of how the game would work. The result can be seen here.

Apparently, it has been 55 weeks since I last posted. I have some excuse--I’ve been working on two different comic book proposals, for Shalott and Dead Angels. It’s time to post again because I just got back from Comic-Con and a week in Los Angeles.
( Read all about it! )

Oh man did I sleep bad last night. A combination of the humidity and bad dreams of gang kids trashing my car and breaking into my home to take revenge for something I don't think I even did. I think I got the idea from Punch Drunk Love, which tiguh_tiguh wanted me to watch. It was so bizarre, but kind of interesting, and there was a similar situation in the movie. I took revenge by showing her AI.
Actually the reason I'm writing is because I have finished a second draft of the complete script of Shalott. For those of you who came in late, that's my graphic novel updating the vampire mythos for the new millennium with some Arthurian themes for good measure. I think it's in pretty good shape, but it's at a point where I need other people to read it over and tell me if they get it. If you're interested in giving it a read to provide me some constructive criticism, let me know. If you just think it sounds cool and want to read it, I suggest you wait for it to get published. I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise.

I had to change the names to protect the innocent (i.e. me), but it's the same characters, part 2 of Odyssey Jones and the Chariots of the Gods!

If you want to watch part 1 it is here.

Whoa, creepy. See tiguh_tiguh
 | You scored as Hoban 'Wash' Washburne. The Pilot. You are a leaf on the wind, see how you soar. You have a good job, and a stunning wife who loves you (and can kill people). Life is good, which is why you can't help smiling. Now if you can just get people to actually listen to your opinion things would be perfect.

I thought I should write an entry when I am not entirely slammed for time, sick, depressed, etc.
Although generally GenCon sucked, I have gotten more freelance work since then than I have ever had at once, and it even fits a semi-reasonable schedule! I am or will be doing art for Ars Magica, Sovereign Stone, and a new White Wolf product! Yes, White Wolf, the #2 RPG publisher after WotC. That's pretty exciting, although they don't pay overly well.
Especially since I just found out what freelance artists are supposed to get... I signed up a while ago on a freelancers' web agency, and recently actually got work through them, and it pays about 5-10 times as much as RPG work. I think I see where I need to redirect my efforts, if I ever want to do this full time again.
I have other work too, further down the road, including a couple of board games, another RPG, and the Realms of Legend project. That's not counting dance gigs. And at least at the moment, I don't feel overwhelmed. I feel like I have a full plate, and that feels pretty good.
Also, I have been trying to avoid things that cause negative energy lately (not ignore, certainly). It seems to be working.

GenCon was a big bust, 'nuff said. Thanks KM for bailing me out Sunday, I think you actually primed the pump for a couple more little sales to make Sunday the best sales day of the whole show. But it was a major money hole for me, so it looks like I won't be going to Dragon Con after all. And I'll be eating ramen for a while.
Anyhoo, I've started work on the Realms of Legend project, which I hope will restore the fun in my life that tiguh_tiguh doesn't already provide.

Wow! I actually have a moment to write. What should I write? I don't know, because my brain is leaking out of my head like baby food!
The last week? Fortnight? No, it's been more like a month--no, two months. Year? Year. No, two months. Just feels like a year.
OK: the last two months have been one long speed trip of stuff to do. At Booz Allen, DARPATech is next week and the last two months have been a collection of late work nights with demanding program managers disappointed in the results, or actually thinking we graphics guys just drag our heels to get more money out of them. Gah. Some of my best fast animation work too. Ungrateful mealtickets.
Also, tiguh_tiguh, love of my life, fast-tracked a project creating a dance video for Centuries, which is a great idea, and is soooo close to being done. Except that I just spent four days chained to my computer at home adding documentary animations in After Effects only to find that I could not burn the rendered files to a DVD-R because, well who knows why? Still working on that one. We still need to do the DVD label and Jewel Box insert and duplication. All to have about 100 copies by Friday so we can start selling DVDs at Pinewoods Dance Camp.
I think when I renew my driver's license, I will have to change my eye color to red.

Can someone help me out here?
tiguh_tiguh and I took great care in ordering blank DVD-R in bulk to have a compatible format with our computers' DVD burners. My DVD burner says DVD+/-. I tried copying a file, any file onto one of the blank DVD-Rs and I'm getting an error that looks suspiciously like an incompatibility issue.
I also tried duplicating a DVD at work using the blank DVD-R and the duplicator didn't seem to recognize the format either.
I admit I am stupid when it comes to technical issues like this. Did we miss something obvious?
I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I had a pretty decent Origins-- the thing I never remember is that I go there to get more work, not to sell prints. That said, I did sell some prints and an original (which led to me doubling my prices on those...). I drew a couple of commissions which turned out great. I also got a lot of interest from various publishers, so it looks like I'll be busy until the end of time.
My favorite visitor was a gentleman by the name of James Anderson who has plans to build this. He was a guest speaker at the con and was fishing for concept artists. I'm still trying to work the hook back out of my lip!
